Event Details

UCL - Institute of the Americas (UCL-IA) is truly honored to host distinguished Caribbean scholar, Prof Robert Hill (UCLA) to deliver this paper, part of UCL-IA's series of Caribbean seminars.

The subject of this paper, M.G. Smith, will no doubt elicit enormous interest on account of his contribution to the field of social anthropology and his work on the Caribbean, but he is also of particular interest for us at UCL since was head of the UCL Department of Anthropology from 1969-1975, the first Jamaican scholar to hold the post.

The paper will critically re-examine Smith's seminal 1960 Report on the Rastafari Movement in Kingston, Jamaica, elucidating the hidden conflicts that lay behind its production.

Attendance is free of charge but registration is required. As spaces are limited you are strongly encouraged to register well in advance of the event.
